Susan shivered as she sat by Medea's side, she had lost all track of time, her mind kept closing down, trying to block out the fear. The man had promised he would be back and the next time she heard the clang of the bolt being drawn he would be carrying the long-bladed knife.

Susan hiccupped and felt sour bile rise in her throat.

When Medea moaned she looked down at her and blinked as Medea's face swam into focus.

'Wake up, Medea,' she said, her voice no more than a whisper.

Medea groaned again and then her head rolled left and her eyes flickered open. She looked up in bewildered confusion and then winced as the pain in her head flared.

'I know you,' Medea said as she tried to sit up.

Susan reached out her good hand and placed it on Medea's shoulder. 'Don't move.'

When Medea's eyes sprang wide, Susan knew that the recollections had come roaring into her head like a tornado.

Susan did her best to keep her hand on her shoulder but suddenly the pain in her arm intensified and she hissed and screwed her eyes closed against the onslaught.

Scrambling to her feet, Medea looked around the metal container, her dark hair tangled, then she sprinted over to the door and started to slam her hands against the corrugated metal.

Susan cradled her damaged hand against her breast, trying to slow her breathing in an effort to control the pain.

Medea spun around, her face blanched with shock. 'Where are we, what does he want?'

'I don't know where we are, Medea, but…'

'I was getting the shopping from the boot of the car and a van pulled in. It had its headlights on and I couldn't see anything – and then he hit me.' Medea lifted a shaking hand to her split lip as if to confirm that all this was real and not some hellish nightmare.

'Have you seen Lasser?' Susan asked.

Medea pushed herself away from the door and took two shuffling forward steps. 'Lasser?'

Susan sighed as she saw the confusion on Medea's face.

'Has this got something to do with Lasser, is that what you're telling me?'

'He hates Lasser,' Susan felt the terror pushing at her senses and tried to get a grip back on reality.

She was twenty-six years old, and she knew she would never see twenty-seven.

The man would make good on his promise, she would scream and beg as he sawed at her fingers, and if she didn't bleed to death he would come back for more.

She tried to see a way beyond the horror but it suddenly flooded through her body – like a purge – dragging all her pitiful hopes and dreams and spewing them out onto the bone-cold floor.

Medea gasped as the vomit shot from Susan's stretched mouth and splattered onto the ground. For the first time she truly looked at the young police officer, she remembered a time when she and Lasser had been together, before the pressure of living with a front-line police officer had become too much.
